Ulysses by James Joyce

Henri Matisse’s illustration (facing page 58) inspired the lines and shapes of the covering leather. The Ulysses story takes place over twenty-four hours. So starting with the pink sunrise, the colors shade down through day and evening to night. Access to a collection of handle letters with unusual typefaces suggested the treatment of the twenty-four quotations that decorate the boards and spine. Fifteen quotes were stamped using 10 pt. founders type and nine utilized 167 individual handle letters. The adhesive was Fixor and four booklets of 23 kt XX gold leaf were required.

Sewing the text block on linen tapes provided the flat spine called for by the design. The machine deckle was lightly trimmed at the tail and fore-edge and the top edge gilt after a minimal trim.  The plain headbands were sewn over a combination leather and vellum core using pink and blue silk.

The leathers were applied from the top down, each piece being trimmed out on the bevel and the next color bevelled to fit it.
